I made some live performance videos in my house this year and at first, I tried to mix them down myself. I was reminded yet again that my mind does not work well with a process that involves so many intricate decisions, not to mention the missing experience and confidence needed to mix and master even the simplest of recordings. So, I sent them to Gizzard Recording to get them up to scratch to go with the videos. 

I thought they’d make an EP to put out while I re-embark on the making of my new record.

My elusive friend Ben Sommers took the photo this year in a canola field somewhere in Essex. This was a very early bloom around April. A lot of canola starts to flower in early summer and by this time most other fields were still green. In my head I wanted the bright yellow fields contrasted with a blue sky, but we got quite a stormy situation which I like.

Making this video was quite an eye-opener. What started off as a simple idea inspired by the Snorricam scene in ‘Requiem For a Dream’ spiralled and sprouted until the agreed aim of my brothers Rolfin Nyhus and Ben Sommers and I became nothing less than to wrap the glorious grime and wonder of late-night Soho into a tiny bundle of lurid cinematic joy. Digging around in the piss-stained pockets of Soho Square for the torn corner of a John Deakin photograph, we scratched at the ripped posters of a Greek Street alley and found The Heart of Saturday Night.Using discounted modern tools, we tried to catch a glimpse of the dark magic which stranded O’Toole in the Coach and Horses and left John Hurt wandering the gutters outside. It’s still there, that magic. The volume has been turned up, there’s a new code, the crowds are intense, and many of them are curious visitors who vacate the area well before closing time. Soho has the filth and the room the for the TikTok generation, and they love it. The neon still shimmers oppressively … admirably excessive … broken, buzzing, dirty.The bricks are old, weathered to crumbling by our kinetic, indulgent energy. As the new builds go up, the clouds of dust and noise engulf them to add decades. When they’re finished they look nothing like the brochure. There’s still the hanging faces of the ones who work too many of the wrong hours in the dark streets and the windowless broom-cupboard kitchens. There’s still the optimism of the young, who glide giddily arm-in-arm in the late, warm evening, as if the place is not ready to eat them up in the early hours. Then there’s the ones who know exactly how a Soho night can brilliantly degrade, and they’re there for it all.Soho’s is an old energy, a history murky, human and honest enough to flourish and be experienced as a meaningful present in the 21st century. It makes sense when you think about it, we all need to get out of our box once in a while, and now, more than ever, we need a place to do it.
